About Today: Hanukkah Treats and Traditions 12/02/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
Hanukkah is so early this year, you can probably surprise your friends by wishing them a happy holiday, and they'll have no idea what you're talking about. Which means that you'll be an extra good friend by reminding them that they can celebrate. Everyone loves an unexpected holiday.

Hanukkah Food Traditions
If you're cooking, however, I hope you remembered that today was Hanukkah sooner rather than later. In any event, I hope you made me some latkes.

My favorite thing about Hanukkah is that you have an excuse to eat fried food. For example, these donuts.

About Today: 10 Sources for Free Christmas Gifts 11/30/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
This year, I've actually set a Christmas budget and am attempting to stick to it. This is great for my bank account. But picking presents is a challenge, since I feel like the amount of money I spend on a gift should be equal to the esteem I have for the recipient.

10 Sources for Free Christmas Gifts
That would mean that my husband's gift would have to be 32 times more expensive than the gift I give to our building superintendent, for example. (Before you try to work out the equation, let me just say that our super's been very helpful about plumbing problems.)
10 Ways to Save Money at Christmas
This is a little crazy, because no one is going to ask you to see the receipt for their gift. And if they do, maybe you have larger problems than your holiday budget.
Free and Low-Cost Christmas Gifts
Many lower cost gifts require more thought and are therefore more valuable to the recipient. For example, my sister can pretty much just give everyone in the family pictures of her son, and we'll all act like she bought us a car.
Give Second-Hand Gifts (Without Looking Tacky)
As with everything, there's a trick to giving cheaply without looking cheap.

About Today: Over 650 Deals for Cyber Monday 11/29/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
It may be better to give than to receive, but actually shopping for all these gifts is kind of a pain in the rear. This is why I prefer to do most of my shopping online, where the only crowds are avatars from whichever nerdy game you're obsessed with this season.

Cyber Monday Deals - Over 650 Deals Posted
Today is a particularly good day for online shopping, as it's Cyber Monday - the online version of that crazy shopping festival Black Friday.
Is Online Shopping Really Cheaper?
Shopping online can be cheaper, too, which is nice. However, I'd be willing to pay a premium to avoid getting stepped on in the checkout line.
Cyber Monday Shopping Tips
Sales, as everyone knows, can be dangerous. It's easy to wind up buying a bunch of stuff you didn't need and don't even want, just because it's on sale.
Cyber Monday Shopping From Work
Another danger to watch out for: Online shopping at work. Those bargains won't seem so cheap if you lose your job as a result.

About Today: 10 Tricks to Get the Best Bargains on Black Friday 11/26/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
Thanksgiving is a major holiday, of course, but I would argue that it pales in comparison with today. Today, of course is Black Friday, when we rise from our tryptophan slumbers, strap on our comfy shoes and go out into the teeming masses, looking for deals.

10 Tricks to Get the Best Bargains on Black Friday
The trick, of course, is not to become dazzled by all the stuff for sale, and forget to look for the actual prices. (Some of which might still be more than you want to spend.)

Store Hours and Early Bird Sales on Black Friday
Before the Age of the Interwebs, we actually had to call stores, using the phone, in order to figure out when they'd be open. Imagine!

Black Friday Shopping Tips
This is the best advice, I think: "Only shop the deals." Don't try to get all of your Christmas shopping done in one day.
Gift Return Policies at Large Retail Stores
Finally, even though we all want to think we pick the perfect gift every time ... it's a good idea to make sure that you're buying from a store with a reasonable return policy, just in case.

About Today: What's Your Favorite Thanksgiving Memory? 11/25/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
My favorite Thanksgiving memory was my Dad making the turkey carcass dance during clean-up. I was about 8 years old at the time, so I'm pretty sure I was waiting for it to help clean. (No such luck.)

What's Your Favorite Thanksgiving Memory?
A close second: My Mom talking to the turkey during cooking time. I'm not totally positive, but I'm pretty sure she was singing at one point. That's either awesome or really creepy, depending on your point of view.
Share Thanksgiving Pictures and Stories
We also have some great pictures of my sister and I attempted to murder one another over the wishbone. Holidays = family fun!

Thanksgiving Across the Country
One of the interesting things to me is that Thanksgiving is pretty much the same in every part of the country - at least, the turkey dinner part. Parades and other celebrations vary widely.
Why We Celebrate Thanksgiving: History and Origin
Fun Thanksgiving fact! The holiday used to be one week later, but FDR pushed it back to leave more time for holiday shopping. This would later be known as "The beginning of tinsel in drugstores in August."

About Today: Give Thanks for Your Child With Special Needs 11/24/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
It's easy to think of Thanksgiving as just an eating holiday, or, at the most, as an excuse to hang out all day with family and not go to work. But it's also a time to be thankful - for our families most of all.

10 Reasons to Give Thanks for Your Child With Special Needs
The holidays can be particularly rough on families with special needs children. The disruption to routine is often harder on those kids, and often, family members aren't as helpful as they could be.
Celebrating Thanksgiving with Your Autistic Loved One
Worse, people who don't know your kids as well as you do might not get all the reasons you have to be thankful FOR them. (Not just around them.)
Start a Thanksgiving Tradition With Your Child
The good thing about traditions is that you can always start new ones. I love the first tradition here: Decorating the house with your kids.

Some of the items in this survival kit are extra hilarious: For example, the perfect thing for the relative who won't shut up about either your child's behavior or your parenting.

About Today: DIY Thanksgiving Decorations 11/22/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
My favorite part of Thanksgiving as a kid was decorating. Well, OK, that's not strictly true. My favorite part was eating cookie dough while my Mom was trying to bake, but decorations were a close second.

Create Your Own Thanksgiving Center Pieces
Decorating for the holidays makes it seem like you've done a major renovation. Everything looks nicer gussied up, and you can feel good because you didn't have to pay a lot to make it happen.
Thanksgiving Table Decorations Kids Will Love
Also: Put the kids to work. Their hands are the perfect size for turkey stencils, for one thing.
Thanksgiving Party Printables
Before the invention of the interwebs, we were forced to go to actual stores and pay money for Thanksgiving designs. (This is my version of walking to school in the snow, uphill both ways. Kids today! They don't know how easy they have it.)

About Today: How to Cook a Turkey 11/19/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
This year was going to be my sister's first attempt at a turkey, but then she had a last-minute reprieve. "And a good thing it is, too," she said. "I was thinking about looking for some kind of turkey support group."

5 Simple Rules for Perfect Turkey Every Time
Cooking a turkey is the most nerve-wracking thing we do on Thanksgiving, besides host our relatives. Most of us just don't spend that much time cooking.
How NOT to Cook a Turkey
I like to start out with the worst-case scenario. If you know what you shouldn't do, it's a lot easier to make sure you're doing things right.
Roast That Turkey!
Next year, my sister will bite the bullet and cook her first bird, with the supervision of our Mom, who claims the whole secret is to talk to Thomas while he's cooking. (And his name is always Thomas, FYI.)

Don't Roast That Turkey!
Whichever method you choose, I wish you the very best of culinary luck this Thanksgiving season. I, of course, will volunteer to bring cranberry sauce as usual, and then run out to the store at the last minute. (See you at the checkout line.)

About Today: Make Thanksgiving Food-Allergy Friendly 11/18/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
I was telling my friend Michelle about my great love for Thanksgiving and she rolled her eyes. "You say that because you're not allergic to any foods," she said. "Otherwise, Thanksgiving would be the holiday during which your entire family tries to kill you, using only stuffing as a weapon."

Before You Buy a Thanksgiving Turkey
This is a fair point. It's tough to be a food allergic person during the feasting season. But there are things you can do to make your Thanksgiving dinner safer for your food-allergic friends.
Allergy-Safe Thanksgiving Menu
One way to go about it is to keep your menu free from the "big eight" - the most common food allergies.
Allergy-Friendly Thanksgiving Dinner
I'm so glad there's such a thing as allergy-friendly pumpkin pie. It really isn't Thanksgiving without pie.
Gluten-Free Thanksgiving Recipes and Menu Ideas
And finally, for my friend Michelle: stuffing that cannot be used as a weapon.

About Today: Get Ready for the Great American Smokeout 11/17/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
Tomorrow is the Great American Smokeout, when smokers all over the country will put out their smokes and their non-smoking friends will be nice to them, or else.

Get Ready for the Great American Smokeout
What I think is particularly brilliant about the Great American Smokeout is that it helps smokers who are dabbling with the idea of quitting get through that crucial first day. Sometimes, it's just too much to consider much more than that.
Your Quit Smoking Toolbox
Maybe the best reason to quit: You get to stop worrying about the damage smoking is doing to your body.
Reader Tips for Dealing With Nicotine Withdrawal
The most amazing thing about the reader responses - over 300 when I last checked! - is how many people are quitting smoking after 20, 30, even 40-plus years.
Smoking and Lung Cancer
As this article points out, everyone has heard: "'My uncle smoked for 60 years and never got lung cancer.' 'My aunt never smoked, but got lung cancer anyway.' What are the facts about cigarette smoking and lung cancer?"

About Today: Are You a Perfectionist? 11/16/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
Most of us are our own worst enemy, and I don't just mean because we're good at talking ourselves out of that morning workout. One of the worst things we do to ourselves? Focus on getting things perfect to the point where we get nothing done at all.

Quiz: Are You a Perfectionist?
Come to think of it, this relates to the morning workout. I'm really good at waking up fifteen minutes later than I'd planned and then deciding there's no point in going at all.
Overcoming Perfectionism
Getting comfortable with things being less than perfect is even harder than avoiding the snooze button. But there are plenty of things you can do right now to practice being un-perfect.
How to Talk to Yourself - Nicely
One reason I'm glad everyone uses headsets now for their cell phones: It makes it hard for people to tell that I talk to myself all day long. The hard part is making sure that I'm saying nice things to myself.
Meditation for Perfectionists
The very idea of meditation is tough for perfectionists, because doing things "right" is beside the point. This is also probably why meditation is good for us.
