Save Over $90 Refinish Your Headlights Guest Post 11/30/10

Hello Fabulous Daily Deals readers! My name is Eliana, and I am visting you from Refinish-it-all.com. On my blog you find different ways to refinish things, and inevitably save money!! The main thing I focus on is decorating and furniture, but I manage to squeeze in a couple of other topics as well. Veronika asked me to share one of my projects with you.

One of the best feelings about owning a car, is writing a check for that last payment. I recently did this, and am very much enjoying the payment free life! What I have noticed though, is that little things start falling apart, and the car simply started to look as though it was aging. One simple thing that can add "age" to your car is foggy headlights. mine got to looking something like this:  (this is my trusty VW Golf, whom I affectionately call Backback)

Foggy.Foggy.
Someone came to my office a while back and was offering to do restore headlights for $100!! I was not really into that. So... I purchased one of the many headlight restoring kits available on the market. I chose the Turtle Wax kit, I found this at Wal-Mart for about $8. Why did I chose the Turtle Wax kit you ask? Well, who can resist that adorable little turtle and the $8 price tag?

The kit contains the following: clarifying compound,(creamy, for buffing) also 3 gritty squares (like sandpaper- to work the surface of the headlight) also a spray lubricant for the squares. you have to keep the square and headlight moist so it doesn't scratch. and lastly, the kit has a sealant wipe.

I am not going to lie. This required a little elbow grease. But the instructions on the box are pretty simple. About halfway through this is what it looked like... I was pleased with the progress.

Left: untouched. Right: halfway there...
The entire process took about 45 minutes,  the more consistent you are with the process the better the result you will receive. You can feel the surface of the headlight as you are going, and have a feel for how much more you should do. At the end you can expect something like this:

oooooooooooooo...... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.......
Again,  Before and After:

Before.

After. :)

Well, thanks for checking out my project! You can see what other shenanigans I get into over at Refinish-it-all.com. If you have any questions regarding this project, contact me atelianasblog@gmail.com .

About Today: How to Thank our Veterans 11/11/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
It's Veterans Day here in the US, which means that it's time to set aside a moment or two to thank all our veterans for their service.

I can cheat at this, since my husband is a vet. So, for me, thanking our vets involves leaning over and saying, "Hey, remember when you went overseas for awhile? Thanks for that!" He's as grateful for my support as you would imagine he'd be. (Hint: There's eye-rolling.)

5 Things to Find Out Before You Put Anything in Your Grocery Cart 11/11/10

By Sally Herigstad
Mom was right: if you want to know when you’re getting the best deal on cereal, detergent, or any other purchase, you have to know what it costs per unit. You can’t just eye-ball the box. (Have you ever wondered why cereal boxes are built like mini-walls, tall and wide but not very deep? It really does look like you’re getting more that way!) You can’t even assume the bigger size is cheaper by the ounce; often it’s not.Always check the price per ounce or unit, usually displayed on the shelf edge sign. For each item you're tossing in the cart, besides the cost per unit, find out:
  • When does it expire? If you don’t check the expiration date on dairy products, sooner or later you’ll wish you had. At least dairy products have a way of telling us when they’re old. Other foods may just be slightly off, or in the case of vitamins and other supplements, just plain useless.
  • What’s in it? If they were honest, many fruit drinks would have pictures of sugar cubes or corn syrup bottles on the sides instead of all those healthy looking fruits. "Wheat" bread isn’t necessarily 100 percent whole wheat. You might be surprised what you’re really getting for your money when you start reading the labels.
  • What will it contribute to your nutrition? Some protein bars aren’t much different nutritionally from candy bars. Two loaves of bread sitting side by side on the shelf can have vastly different fiber, calorie and other nutritional counts. Check it out.
  • Where does it come from? All imports to the United States must meet FDA standards. Nevertheless, the FDA cannot inspect every item that comes into the country, so use your own judgment. If nothing else, finding out where your food comes from gives an appreciation for the global economy we all live in.

Ex-Tempe cop accused of selling nude photos on eBay will face state board 11/10/10

by Laurie Merrill - Nov. 10, 2010 01:18 PM

A former Tempe police officer accused of posting nude photos of his ex-girlfriend on the Internet and selling them on eBay could lose his certification to be a police officer in Arizona.
Curtis G. Baumgarth, 42, has reached a consent agreement in his case before the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST), but details were unavailable.
The board will decide on Weekday whether to accept the decree or take action that could include revoking his certification.
Baumgarth is on probation after pleading guilty to Attempted Computer Tampering in January 2009. He also was ordered to pay $1,165 to the ex-girlfriend he was accused of harassing.
In a pre-sentence report, the ex-girlfriend described how Baumgarth "was able to manipulate and control me . . . He would manipulate me to believe that practically everything I said was a lie . . . He would punish me by charging me $300 per lie, on top of a $10,000 deposit I gave him."
The woman, a registered nurse, said Baumgarth "became violent" when she tried to pull away.
"He would continuously call me all night long," she wrote. "He would send me hundreds of texts a day."
She said he came into her home, took things from her and physically attacked her.
Baumgarth, she said, sent photos of the pair in "compromising positions to my friends, he posted nude photographs of me on the Internet, and sold them on eBay."
He told her if she did not have sex with him 30 times he would send the photos to her employer, family and more friends, she said.
"He also threatened me saying that he would make sure that I lost my Nursing License and my job if I ever went to the Tempe Police Department with any of this."
Baumgarth also told her he had looked up criminal histories on all her male acquaintances, according to a police report.
Baumgarth was arrested in February 2008 on suspicion of three charges connected to threatening and/or computer tampering.
Against the wishes of the ex-girlfriend, Baumgarth, who worked 14 years for Tempe police before he was fired in May 2008, pleaded guilty in January 2009 to one count of attempted computer tampering.
On his behalf, nearly 25 colleagues, relatives and friends, including another ex-girlfriend, his current girlfriend and his ex-wife, wrote letters requesting leniency.
His ex-wife wrote in her letter that Baumgarth is an excellent father to his daughters, 15 and 13.
"They obviously have been traumatized over this whole ordeal . . . and they are very, very upset over the possibility of their dad going to jail," she wrote.
Police Commander Danny Franco praised Baumgarth's work. "As his supervisor I was always confident in his performance and work ethics . . . he gets a long with everybody."
"The Curt I met and fell in love with and have known over the years is not the man his accuser claims he is," an ex-girlfriend wrote.
--- Reporter Lisa Halverstadt contributed to this report.

About Today: 7 Ways to Keep Your Holiday Spending Under Control 11/10/10

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
I'm the worst when it comes to budgeting for the holidays. I always intend to write things out, but then opt to wing it at the last minute, figuring that I'll just keep my spending under control. (Seriously, sometimes it's like I've just met me.)

7 Ways to Keep Your Holiday Spending Under Control
The problem is that I want to be Elvis, giving away Cadillacs, and that's not a good idea financially. (Probably, it wasn't even a good idea for Elvis.)
How to Budget Holiday Spending
So this year, for the first time, I'm writing everything down and making a budget, like a grown-up.
Why Do We Go Into Debt for the Holidays?
After all, no one has ever sent a thank-you card that said, "Thanks for going into massive credit card debt for my holiday enjoyment!"
8 Tips to Budget for Holiday Travel
While I'm being responsible, I think I'll work my travel plans into the budget. This is actually where most of us go wrong: We forget that traveling during the holidays costs a bazillion dollars.
